Julep: Jodie, LA Girl: Magnetized & Magnet Test

So many exciting things to share today. First, as promised, my impression of Julep polish. Last night was the bachelorette party, so I chose Jodie to escort me to the bar.

Formula-wise, I had absolutely no problems. The first coat went on smoothly and would have been enough, except that it was a bit sheer. Since I was in a time crunch I used the quick-dry spray on that then proceeded to paint the second coat and finished with my topcoat. Between getting dressed, eating dinner and setting up everything was fully dry. See? No smudges or anything.

The color is really pretty. Like a brick-red/burgundy? It definitely has a bronze shimmer, though. Indoors I thought it was a bronze polish until I got it into proper light! So weird how that works. My only complaint is that I'm holding the bottle up-side-down for the picture. That's it. I'm so excited for my next box!!!

Now... Before I left the house I got quite the interesting email from BornPrettyStore. Many of you have been here with me through my glow-in-the-dark woes, so you understand why I couldn't resist checking this out:

SERIOUSLY?! *falls over* Different color glows and on sale?! Needless to say, I suppose, I no longer have that $10 sitting in OpinionOutpost. I immediately cashed out (seriously trying to talk myself out of it the whole time, my clicky-hand would not listen) and ordered two for myself.

Blue and red. Yes, red. How cool is that?! I could have gotten orange as well, but I'm pretty sure it's coming from China and I really wanted that package tracking.

After that unforeseen moment of weakness it was off to the bachelorette party! Now, I don't get out much. 95% of that is by choice. I don't go to bars and I don't do things with large groups. Even so I was determined to support my girl. I didn't drink, I didn't insert myself into the teeny bit of drama (involving poorly made and over-priced drinks) and I didn't join in the reindeer games, being happily married and unlikely to embarrass myself even if I wasn't. Still, I sat and chatted with a couple of girls (and one of Aaron's friends that happened to show up for a bit) and was happy to see that other people showed up and had more balls than I so I think the party was a success. *shrugs*

One of the chat topics was the magnetic polishes. I felt bad that I hadn't tried the LA Girls from HEB (the easy-to-find and inexpensive one) so this morning I set up a test for that particular polish and it's magnet. An experiment much more in line with the scientific method than some of my others. ;)

I started out by pulling out my variety of magnets. How does LA Girl's Magnetized work with each of the different magnets?

This result was interesting and unexpected. My thumb, index and pinky (Barry M, Nabi & China Glaze magnets respectively) showed the design fairly well with Barry M leading the pack. My middle and ring fingers (cheap chinese heart and LA Girl magnet) barely showed the design at all. Why didn't the LA Girl magnet show up with the LA Girl polish? Surely I don't know. The next step was to see if there was something wrong with the magnet and try it on my different magnetic polishes.

Index finger is China Glaze: Cling-On which showed the design quite well. Middle finger is LA Girl Magnetized which I gave a second chance to and it still barely showed. Ring finger is Naby Sky Blue which took the design the best, I think. Pinky is Barry M Magnetic Dark Silver which changed less than the LA Girl. Curiouser and curiouser. I have no idea what it means, though! All it looks like is that the Barry M has the strongest magnets and Nabi has the most malleable formula. One more thing before I finish my experiment:

LA Girl's Polar Opposite with both of the LA Girl magnets. You can almost see the design wanting to show up with the bullseye. The chevron showed up better, but still not chevrony!! *gggrrr* (Sorry for the horribly out-of-focus picture) Perhaps I should have foregone the tracking # and ordered the chevron bar magnet from BornPrettyStore. *sigh* Next time. Kristy from Blissful Beauty had pretty good success with their polish/magnet. Maybe their chevron will be "the one".

One last little bit before I go and fill out another application. (*whimpers*) Abbie mentioned that the shimmer in I'm With The Lifeguard seemed similar to the shimmer in Cha Cha Cha. (Have I really been focusing on polish for almost 5 months? dang) I hadn't even thought of that, so I immediately did a side-by-side comparison to satisfy our mutual curiosity.

This is three coats of each and it turns out they are very different. Not just the color, but the shimmer as well. They are both shimmery green, but Cha Cha Cha has more of a warm/gold shimmer while I'm With The Lifeguard has more of a cool blue/silver shimmer. Maybe that makes it brighter? Either way, they're both fabulously lovely.

*ugh* I think they have a space cadet bringing Space Cadet to me. I was excited to see that it left Dallas last night which meant a decent chance of getting it today, but.... it went from Dallas to Ft Worth! O_o Why did it do that?! *groans* It left Ft Worth early this morning so hopefully I'll get it tomorrow. In the meantime I have in my head a layering combo that I hope works out well. Week's almost over, hope everyone is doing well!

  1. I can't believe that they are that different! It's so weird how you can be convinced that two polishes look similar and then you put them together and they completely change! I wish I could have both CGs :(

    1. Right? I thought for sure they would be a lot closer than they are.

I love hearing from you!
