Failed "Overalls" Mani

I don't even feel like posting this. Almost didn't, but I've found blogging to be kind of cathartic. Why else would I still be doing it after almost six years? LOL Aaron's finally feeling better. After being up for 32 hours and in pain for almost 18 of them his tooth is finally feeling better. If I had a microphone going you could hear how much better. Hasn't shut up since he woke up a couple hours ago. Definite improvement over the misery groans.

So, I had this idea. I still think it's a solid idea, I just should have gone with my gut and done something different after I realized how dark my blue was. I wanted something like this. Either of those. I don't think we ever got the "Denim Wanted" collection here, though. :( Here's what I had:

That's two coats of "hard to resist" and I was so proud of myself when I stayed under 5 strokes per coat/nail. Was. My victory was kind of short lived. I have this sort of paint splatter design on one of my plates that I've been eyeing since I got them. I wanted to do paint-spattered overalls. You know, like that girl in Not Another Teen Movie? So I started with white "paint" and so far so good....

Then I did some yellow, which looked more grey, but that was fine. It still looked like splattered paint... more or less. My purple wasn't nearly opaque enough, then I tried the Runts Grape and it would have looked good (I think), but it kept smearing on the stamper. I finally busted out the Wet & Wild Wild Card that I kept putting off and and strange as it kept looking on the plate:

It at least didn't look grey over the dark blue:

It was my intention from the beginning to finish this off matte, but it still didn't make them look like old paint-covered overalls....

To top off my massive fail-fest, the little circle design I picked out for the buttons didn't want to transfer. :( Oh, no, to top top it: I went over everything with another coat of 'hard to resist' and dug out the KleanColor bluebell holo glitter.... It really is the most holo-ey out of the ones I got.... I didn't get pictures because there wasn't any sun (and I'm still going to do the video swatches of those)..... and after Aaron finally fell asleep I passed out for a couple hours. Jelly base over 5 layers of polish, even dry polish, needs a topcoat. :( So here I sit, feelings seriously hurt, nails naked. I don't want to start polishing since we're leaving shortly to pick up food (kinda missed out on eating between the teeth and the passing out) and I just know that I'll end up doing something bad and possibly crying.

I do have a very pretty (in the store, at least), very special (looking.... to me) polish that I've kept secret. It's not a holo or magnetic (I really haven't even been a little tempted to grab one at the price they're selling 'em for) or color change or anything really "special"; but I saw it and audibly gasped in the store. It's my most expensive so far, but I don't even care about that too much. If I had found this color at Dollar Tree it would still be as pretty. I just really want to wait for sun. Which we're supposed to get this weekend. *fingers crossed*

At the moment my brain is so frazzled and my emotions are shot so I'm just waiting on a chat buddy to make a color choice for me. I think depending on how I feel after taking my mom to the hospital tomorrow (simple procedure, no worries) I'll dig through my stash, see what I have that I haven't worn yet and post up the list for y'all to pick what you want to see. How's that sound? Fun? I think I'll give it a go anyways, just so I know what I haven't worn yet. lol Hope y'all have a great day.

Oh, and since I happened to have my camera with me in the kitchen, here's some magnets a friend of mine saved from being thrown in the trash. Thanks Ahtram!! I've had these for a while, but... ya know. Just got a picture so I figured I'd throw it up here.

*Going through so many nail blogs I keep getting all jealous. I'll never have enough followers for companies to send me free stuff. I have to keep telling myself that it's ok! In all honesty I do prefer a smaller fanbase. I'm not a "nail blogger", just some chick with a blog. I know I'd regret it if I painted (ha!) myself into a corner as far as postable content. I only started posting my nails recently and never thought anybody would care. Just had to share my excitement over the stamper Aaron got for me. Just... hrm. Yeah, that's been on my mind for a few days now. To be honest I keep waiting for something not nail-related to post about; kinda the same boat I was in when it was all Sims posts. Coming up soon we'll be making another trip to Dallas so hopefully something interesting will happen there. LOL K, bye for real this time.

Stamped China Glaze Poetic

Aw. :( Aaron's tooth is hurting him. I hate to see him all miserable. Seems like the day for it, I guess. Took the car in for an oil change and the maintenance light is still on. Next time I'm going to Midas. Maybe it's a carryover from yesterday since I went to Ulta and their clearance section really kinda sucked. Mostly ugly pink Revlons and some off-white Essies. I did find some nice colors, though:

The two green Ultas (Limelight & The Jungle Look) were marked down to $2. The essence (Luxury Secret) and ChG (Poetic) were full price. Still, with my coupon it all came out to under $10. And I got my rewards card! If you couldn't tell by the title, the first one I had to try was Poetic:

It's got kind of a metallic finish I wasn't expecting. All those visible brushstrokes? All me. I'm kind of a (chronic) over-stroker. I counted once and I'll get in anywhere between 10 and 30 strokes per finger. Awful, I know. Thankfully a good topcoat will cover up a multitude of sins.

I wore it all day like that and it started to remind me of Avon's Fusion. I knew they were different because Poetic can look kind of peachy in certain lights and angles, and the finish is totally different. Then I had an idea. Rather than doing a regular swatch I'd try my hand at some subtle stamping. Bregje over at Oooh, Shinies does some amazing subtle stamping, so why not give it a shot? Given the choice between flowers and swirls, Aaron picked swirls. So I used this nailart plate:

I'm pretty sure that's a widly used design between the big plate companies. Then I dug out Fusion and this is what it looks like:

Maybe a little too subtle? I like it. It's kind of elegant and you can't see all the spots I missed. lol Before I head off I've got one last thing. A lot of people will say that you "must" use 100% acetone on these stamping plates. I don't think so. I just use whatever's leftover in my old bottle of remover. Whatever that happens to be. I've been useing non-acetone remover on my plates for weeks now and haven't had any problems. I just wipe it real good on my paper towel and it's good as new. I've still got some left in that bottle, but my new one is "strengthening" remover so I'll get to see if that does anything weird to my plates next. Hope my hubby's tooth feels better soon and I hope y'all are having a great day.

Fishy Stamped Toes

Wow! Almost 10 whole followers. How bizarre. Welcome everybody, and good morning. I actually did my toes before my fingers yesterday, but I thought adding this to that would be a bit much. Sorry if you have an aversion to feet. I do not. Since I have a few stamping designs that are either too big for my fingers, or simply can't see myself really using them, I decided it would be a shame to let the plates just sit there. So between my fingers and toes yesterday I used four of my untried plates and only have four more to go! (until I order another set, of course) After painting my toenails with Wet n Wild: Blue Moon I thought this ocean-themed plate would work nicely.

I might use this some day if I'm making a special aquarium trip or something, but even so some of the images are really big. So big toes it is! I used the shark on my left:

and the kissing gouramis on my right:

Yes, that toe looks darker because I kinda borked the first stamp and had to add a second coat of the blue. In case anyone is curious, I really don't see myself trying to stamp all my little piggy toes. I'd have to be insanely bored to put myself through that. Not outside the realm of possiblity, but not very likely either.

We finally got printer ink!! O_o Well, of course this is exciting because Ulta has a $3.50 off $10 coupon again! So I printed out three of those (it's good 'til March 10) before the ink vanishes into thin air again. I'm going to try (hard) to get out there today. While there I'm going to get a rewards card. After the first trip I wasn't sure I'd ever go back (it's still a bit intimidating, but I'm getting more used to it, I think), but I keep ending up there and... it feels like time. Hope everyone has a great day!

Brak Inspired Quilt Mani

Started this design at 9:30am. Didn't finish until 6:30pm. Course I had to go out, and I spent a couple of hours playing Saints Row. Still, it took forever and didn't come out 100% the way I hoped, but.... I'd say 95%. And that's pretty darn good. I got the initial spark from Chloe's Nails, but the design is based purely on a warm Brak Quilt. I was checking out Chloe's blog and saw her patchwork manis. I thought "if that was a bit less symmetrical it would look like a quilt" which got me missing Brak and then I was on a mission to do quilt nails. I still had my base of Nude It! untouched so I started with that.

essence: nude it!

I really like brown, pink and blue together. Maybe not necessarily the shades I used, but you work with what ya got, right? Well, here's what I used:

all except that Blue Moon in the back row....

If you have any questions on the colors, go ahead and ask. If you're going to try something like this, though, you can use whatever colors you want! That's half the fun.

I used the taping method to get my blocks of "fabric" and a nail art brush for the "stitching" and stamped some randomish images with Wet n Wild white. Finished off with a matte topcoat because that made it look more fabricy. Here is the finished product:

Left Hand

Right Hand

Next I'll go through each finger, just because I think this particular design kind of warrants it. And, ya know, it took forever so I'm going to make this part last as long as I can. Not all of these pictures are 100% in focus, but hopefully you get the idea.

Left Pinky

Blue painted on the bottom. That's supposed to be a stamped butterfly and flower.

Left Ring

More patchy with a heart in the middle.

Left Middle

Lined up some lace and that's an envelope with a heart "sticker" on top.

Left Index

No stamping. Was trying to show off the pink and blue.

Left Thumb

I had to redo this one after totally messing up the paint. At least you can see the pink shimmer hiding in the blue. That's a dolphin on the bottom, peace signs in the middle and stars on top.

Right Pinky

Pink on top and a teddy bear stamped on bottom.

Right Ring

No stamping here. I started on my right hand so this was more of a technique practice.

Right Middle

Blue painted on bottom. Flowers stamped on top and that's supposed to be paisely on the bottom. Didn't quite transfer fully.

Right Index

I know it's a bit hard to see, but there's three flowers in the middle pink patch.

Right Thumb

I couldn't resist using Hello Kitty. Pleasantly surprised by how clearly she transferred! And it looks like she's studying so this one reminded me of Brak, too.

My only major complaint is that I wish I had used grey or a light brown for the stitching. The blue is really more of a stark contrast than I thought, but I'm hesitant cleaning off the nail art brushes to use in different polishes.... other than that little technicality I think it turned out pretty good. What do you think? Does it look quilty?

KleanColor Chunky Holo Scarlet

I don't usually buy or wear reds, but since I still have a couple of these to try out (and it's been a long while since I did red) I figured why not? Drawing off of my experience with Clover I started with a base of red. Just red.

EW! I don't know why my fingers look so red and splotchy there. -_- That could be one reason I don't wear reds. I used a quick dry because I knew my dad would be calling to be picked up from the truck lot, and sure enough he did. I have to interject a bit and say I finally got to the lot before he did and as I sat and watched him back that giant truck up into a tiny little space I was in awe. I've always loved and respected my dad, but watching him back that truck up like a badass just took it to a whole new level.

Next I added two coats of Scarlet. It's a red jelly base with glitter that shines red, orange and gold. Hard to capture, but since red kinda rubs me the wrong way I was a bit underwhelmed anyway. Even so, I tried. Outside:

Inside:

And the bottle:

I think next time I'll layer it over black, or a deep purple to offset the glitter a bit more. I tried to add some interest with a dark blue funky french and that still didn't help me with it.

I'm surprised that bottle showed as blue as it did. Whenever I look at it, it just looks black. That's Blue Moon. I currently have that on my toes, which I'll be stamping at some point today. For my nails I decided to take a break and try out my new essence: nude it!

I'll probably be stamping over that by the end of the day, too. For now my eyeballs are enjoying the color break.

To finish up I'll just share this bit of goodness. I made the executive decision to not be totally selfish with all of my internet monies and traded in some MyPoints for a $10 Papa John's gift card. It's Aaron's favorite and I'll even let him pick the toppings. ;) Hope everyone has a great day.

Glow Crackle Revisited

This particular combination is becoming an excersize in frustration. I think it's just something you have to try yourself to see how it really looks, but I went all out and gave it my best shot. Unfortunately there's not much more I can do to try and show you, but here's what I got anyway.

First, though, to more clearly answer Abbienail's question; this is the pink I used for my pacman ghost:

Like most scented polishes it's pretty gloopy. Second, can somebody please explain to me why I thought this was fuschia?

That's the color block on the avon site for Fusion. Even after looking at the bottle I still kept picturing fuschia in my head. So I was pretty pleasantly surprised when the actually color was more toned down and "neutral" than I had pictured in my head.

Kind of a dusty rose color with some shimmeries. Very pretty, but a lot more adult-looking than I was in the mood for. So I grabbed my Warpaints Beauty Glow Pink and added two coats. It didn't really change the color, but it added more sparkly glitter (and a secret glow-in-the-dark).

After a day of wearing it like that I decided to retry capturing the glow under crackle. I didn't want to use the black again and I didn't want anything too clashy, so I did a test:

And decided on Ulta's silver Quake topcoat.

Then things got a little sketchy. I dug the blacklight out from under the bed, cleaned off the bulb and locked myself in the bathroom for about an hour with 2 cameras and 1 video camera trying my absolute very hardest to get the stupid glow to show up in a stupid picture! I ended up sort of catching it on the video, but then when I popped the video into two different editing programs neither wanted to show it! Rather than trusting what I couldn't see I just screenied the videos. It really was a lot brighter in real life. The first is without the crackle.

And then with the crackle.

Maybe I should have used the black.... It's kind of like one of those secret images where you have to look past it to see it. I dunno. Once I get my nail wheel in I'll experiment a bit more. That way I'm not stuck wearing black crackle all day if I really don't wanna. Since I prefer to end on a high note, here's two of Fusion from my camera's phone. The first by itself:

And the second topped with Glow Pink:

Hope you enjoyed.

February's Random Phone Pics!

Well, since getting my snazzy new camera I really didn't have any random pictures taking up space in my phone. This month it was mostly pics I had taken to send to people (Sandy lol) and just didn't delete. A couple are more random, though. And one.... is really creepy. So stay tuned for that.

First up, I finally ended up capturing the green in Gray's Anatomy and Where Is The Party?. Wanna see?

So purdy. I have to get a backup bottle of WITP. That day, though, was my Hot Topics trip and I snapped a picture of the bottles I picked up. Warpaints Beauty Glow Pink and White Noise.

Let's see... oh yes, here's a picture I intended to add to yesterday's post, but I didn't want to screw up my polish while wrenching open my phone to get at the memory card. One day I'll get a cord for it.

On our daily trip to HEB I was lucky enough to catch this awesome angle of the firetruck with the wind blowing the flag perfectly. Only caught a glimpse of the firefighters this time, but the truck is still exciting.

These next two are kind of interesting in a different way. I took my mom to her diabetes appointment on Thursday morning and while she was checking out I had a seat right next to a huge display of doctor business cards. Two of them caught my eye. This first doctor's last name is "Laffer". If you've ever played the Leisure Suit Larry games, then you'll know why it's funny. If not... sorry.

This next one was more of a WTF kind of shock. This doctor's first name is "Swastika". Yes, really. I wonder if that's a common name where s/he's from?

Almost done! This is my current polish. Well, how my current polish started. I took this to show Sandy (because I kept confusing myself on the color) and if she shows up she may notice I cropped out my fat wrist. lol Really ended up with a weird angle. Anyway, if you made it this far, congratulations! Preview of what's in store tomorrow.

Did I say I had something disturbing lurking in my phone? I believe I did. Well, here it comes. I don't know if it happens to you, but from time to time the camera on my phone totally borks the picture. One of the reasons I like having a seperate camera. Usually it's just a bit of digital annoyance that screws up the color or, ya know, seperates the image. Sometimes the picture is still useable. Sometimes not so much. Anyway, the other day I was taking a normal picture of myself for my hair project and I swear the image looked fine on the screen. Then, when I pulled it off the memory card I saw this!

Holy OMG WTF is that?! Looks like I haz demon face. I kinda wish the glitch would've extended to the top of my head, but still! I even named that one "DisturbingGlitch.jpg". Aaron says "Don't delete that one!" lol So there you have it. The images that accumulated in my phone during the month of February. Hope you enjoyed seeing them as much as I enjoyed taking them.
