Day #06

Almost April. And still so much to do before my dad gets home. I got to talk to my scorpio-sis Wkd, so I'm feeling a little better overall. Just so sleepy! Before sharing my sim pics (and thank you so much for that generous offer, Brak. ^_^) I had to share. Went to Goodwill and picked up a fabulous pair of jeans for $2 so you'll be seeing some pics of those soon. One day I'll fix the ass hole in my other jeans, but these ones are great. hehehehe Now, some sim pics.

First a set up since I don't feel like html-ing all over the place. I made the bitch on sims. I wasn't about to waste time trying to make it look exactly like her, but there was a pre-made almost monkey face that was close enough. She has fortune aspiration. I used a cheat to bring her personality stats down to a more accurate level and her only interests are money and crime. I have her in the dungeon kept secret by a badass chick sim I had (who was formerly in an apartment, I moved her out for this reason) who is the head of the Sim CIA. Hehehehe. You'll see the non-descript outside of the house, the dungeon and a picture of bitch (Who I named Bitchy McBitch, btw) going insane, thanks to a thing I downloaded that turns your sims insane. ^_^ Look forward to pictures of her passed out in her own urine. Also is 2 pictures of my fed Sim showing how un-concerned she is and going on with her daily life.

Day #05

Someone just kill me now. Each day seems longer than the last. I've never been so miserable and exhausted. And it's not even April. *sigh* Tomorrow is April. A new month on the horizon. That's it for now. I probably have a ton of mails to go through then I'm off to bed. *hugs everyone*

Day #04

*imitates Homer voice* 4?! Ooooooohhhh!!!! It feels like at least 6. Today was another 'coulda been worse' kind of day. Except for it's one of those where my sister gets off kinda early and is going in kinda late tomorrow so they have time to move around. Pleh. Anywho, took Sandy up to the PX and she picked up this super cute bathing-suit coverup thing. She knows I'm gonna steal it from her. ^_^ Got back and mowed the front yard. Now I just have to do the side yard tomorrow. And all I have left of the dishes is 2 baking sheets and 1 serving platter. Or is that 1 bs and 2 sps? I dunno. One of the things is a sheet cake serving thing with a lid. *thinks* 3 big rectangles and 1 circle. :-p Plus the dishes we used today. I need to remember to pick up some dish liquid while I'm out tomorrow. And check the box of dishwasher detergent to make sure I have enough. And tomorrow I have to get the money order for the rent and pay some bills online and Tuesday I have to get the brakes done and the van inspected.

So, I found the information for changing her flight and it was all kinds of complicated! So I forwarded it to my mom (in case my Uncle can figure it out) and my dad (so he can look at it when he gets home) so hopefully we can come up with something. *fingers crossed*

*ugh* I wish the playstation wasn't busted. I want to play Grand Theft Auto in the worst kind of way. I miss killing people. I'm seriously thinking of getting it for the computer. Not sure how the controls would work . . . but I adapted for Sims, right? Right.

Day #03

Well, today was better than yesterday. O.o Woulda been scary if it were worse, eh? (Now I'm Canadian, eh? ) Of course little bitch decided to take Jet in there, since she's technically my mom's and she doesn't care so there's nothing I can really do. Until it's too late, of course. I mean she (mom) keeps saying "She's not gonna hurt her." like a mantra, but she doesn't know that! Doesn't know this bitch from the asshole across the street, just takes her at face value. Which, as we all know, is worth squat. *gggrrrr* BUT! There is yet a silver lining. I talked to my mom and she wants me to find out if she can get an earlier flight back. Not because of the fight, I guess she assumes it'll make the news if things go downhill, but because she just can't stand living with her sister for a month. Which is why we kept asking her "Are you sure you want to be gone that long?" So now I gotta get on priceline and see what they're exchange policy is on e-tickets. *fingers crossed* See if I can get her coming in on the 15th or 16th. Hehehehehe. She wants to be here for the duration of my dad's vacation and that's the 18th so maybe I can be sneaky. "Oh, well they didn't have any direct flights except for on that day." Hehehehehe. Ahem.

Also talked to my dad again. He's stuck in Oklahoma (where the wind comes rushing down the plains) and hungry and wanted the number for a nearby Pizza Hut. 4 little miles and they wouldn't deliver. "It's out of our area." I think they were just scared to deliver to a non-residence. Chicken shits. I did find him a BBQ/truck stop place 2.6 miles right up the highway. He can't move the truck and he said if they wouldn't deliver (and there wasn't something good on tv) that he'd see about walking. We've walked further, and there's a good chance he could wrangle himself a ride back to the truck so I'm not too concerned. He's pretty savvy.

Oy. Still gotta get the brakes looked at. First thing Monday, I suppose.

Day #02

Oh ye Gods, today was so long. First thing this morning Aaron informs me that Bitch went and took Onyx into their room while I was asleep. So up I get and catch her bringing Onyx out. I tell her that Onyx is my cat and that I don't want her in that room. This bitch flies right off the handle. Screaming and pointing her finger right in my face. I keep telling her Onyx is MY cat and if she's got such a problem she can leave. Then she tries to draw me into a fight so I tell her to go ahead and swing cuz I'll go right ahead and call the cops. That's when my sister comes and grabs her and drags her into the bathroom. To my credit, I didn't even remove my ass from the footstool. Of course this also prompted a call from each of my parents telling me to calm down and ignore her. My mom even told me "don't be such a scorpio!" which would be offensive if she wasn't one herself. lol I'm hoping this will be a catalyst of some kind. She thinks she's got it so bad? Fine, go.

I dropped my sister off at work, and that trip was civil. She got the chance to work extra hours so I still haven't picked her up yet. But I have been spending a lot of time with Jet. Especially since Aaron finally got to sleep today! Finally! I think he's actually feeling better. *fingers crossed* I've also gotten more cleaning done. Almost done with the dishes and cleaned up my mom's bathroom some. Even remembered to pick up paper towels. Hehehehe.

So, yes. I'm being good. Trying really hard to at any rate. I would rally y'all to pray for her imminent departure but as I've said many times, as bad as she claims she has it, she knows she has it too good. It's going to take my sister growing some balls and throwing her out on her ass.

Day #01

Well, that could have gone a lot worse. So, I got home and we hung out a bit. Neopets and all. Then I went and laid down with Jet. My mom's bed is so comfortable compared to our tiny futon with the bars poking through the mattresses. Poor girl misses her mommy already. So I laid there watching USA. They showed an episode of Walker, Texas Ranger that had Jigsaw (from the Saw movies) as a bad guy. ^_^ Anyway, every time I'd fall asleep my mom would call to let me know she made it safely to the next airport, and when my Aunt picked her up. So she landed safely and is in Pennsylvania.

I didn't have to take my sister to work, but I did pick her up; and I guess I'll be taking her to and from for the rest of the month. Except maybe when my dad's here. We actually talked like people, so maybe that's a good start for being able to ask her why she puts up with her girl's bullshit. Her g/f wasn't too horrid. A lot of in and out, but she spent most of her time holed up in the room. All in all could have been a lot worse.

I did do four loads of dishes (yes, they pile up, so sue me) and cleaned out the freezer. Also did some random picking up of things that were on the floor. Hehehe. Productive.

Day #00

So I dropped my mom off at the airport down the street. There was a fog advisory, but it wasn't that foggy. Didn't have a problem getting her checked in (I always worry about those e-tickets) and she's set up for her wheelchair through all of the terminals. It's almost six so she's in the air on her way to Houston. 9 days until my dad comes home for his weekend. I keep trying to tell myself that everything will be okay. Maybe it will. My sister gave back the truck to the person she was buying it from so they're going to have to rely on the kindness of me to get anywhere. Who knows? Maybe that was a stroke of luck. And if I'm feeling like I need it my dad's just a phone call away. Oh, and if anyone's planning on travelling far by plane, we went through priceline and from here to Wilkes-Barre (I know I told a few of you Scranton, I thought it was) and back was only $306. ($260 before taxes and such) And no booking fee! Hahahaha! Hrm. I guess that's it for now. My dad already called to make sure she got through alright.

Fair Warning

The time is almost upon me. If anybody wants to share my pain with me I'll be doing a lot of bitching in "friend" blogs so make sure you're logged in to read 'em. I also have 3 counters on my profile. One for daddy's normal weekend, one for when he comes home for vacation, and one for when my mom finally gets back.

Also, I don't know how much time I'm going to be online. Enough, to be sure, so that I don't miss out on that 3rd place daily dare trophy on neopets; but possibly not much more. Got a cute little puppy to keep an eye on. She's going to be so lonely.

So, 5 hours 'til we leave for the airport. *sigh* Wish me luck, and pray for Aaron. His gland (the one in his neck) is giving him hell.

Ninja's Rock! :-D

And the plan all comes together so perfectly. Hehehehe. Okay, remember last time I said I couldn't go into detail but that I'd catch ya up after the mission was complete? Well, it's complete, and here we go. We didn't just randomly go out to Brak's in the middle of the night. We randomly went out and stole one of her big yard rocks. ^_^

Aw. She's so cute. ^_^ So, then comes the plan. Paint the rock so it's more ninja-ey and take it back. Muahahahaha! Yes, the box ninjas also go all arts & crafts on rocks. Enjoy:

Awesome ninja-ness.

Adventerous Eating Pt. 3b

Hurray! Round of applause for Aaron everybody! *applauds* He found the camera! So, without further ado, here is our absolutely scrumptious Shepard's Pie.

Hehehehe. Also, I tried a little experiment. I haven't seen the pics on our comparitively huge comp screen yet, but I took a series of pictures while driving down the highway to pick him up from Nates. Kinda something I wish I could've done in Germany again, I guess. *sighs* Anyway, I was thinking of making them into a slideshow. See if it actually looks progressive or if I have to take them closer together. Or maybe have Aaron do it so I'm not trying to drive 70mph and take pictures at the same time. :-p

Adventerous Eating Pt. 3

This one, I think, is by far my favorite. I have to find the camera so you can see how good it looks. And that's nothing compared to how it tastes! *drools* My dad wasn't home for St. Paddy's Day, so today in honor of the Irish celebration we made Shepard's Pie! *goes to search for camera*. . . . . I'm a bad ninja. I took the pics in the kitchen and we came right in here after. I would have set it down before trying to climb into this chair (my semi-permanent residence) and now it's gone!

Anyway. We used ground beef, fresh onion, fresh carrots, a chopped up potato, and frozen peas and mushrooms for the inside and boxed just-add-water mashed taters for the top. Also sprinkled on some crushed up crackers for a little extra something. We tried browning the top in the oven, but that didn't quite work out. We didn't want the inside to get all dry waiting on the crust so we just served it as is. I'm not the kind of person that likes to let my food touch ("But it's all going to the same place" Bleh) so I was shocked at how well all of the flavors blended themselves together. It was SO good.

And just as soon as I find that blasted camera you can see how good it looked. *gggrrrr* Oh I will. Probably before I find my box of hippie patches. Apparently I tore a hole in the ass of my jeans (currently the only pair that fits) climbing over the back fence. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yuck it up. At least I made it over (twice!) without breaking anything.

Also, if you like a little movie with your gore, check out The Midnight Meat Train. In our opinion (yes, we 100% agree on this movie) the ending was a tad 'off', but the content of the rest of the movie more than made up for it. Some of the best death scenes we've ever seen. *WHAP!* hehehehehe

The Ninjas Strike Again!

Mwahahahaha!! And this time we didn't get caught. Got out there and got back without incident. Not such bad ninjas after all. ^_^

Hehehe.

There are grander ninja things in the works, but I've already said too much. You'll just have to wait and see what's in store. Be warned, citizens! Box Ninjas are on the loose!

25 Hours And Counting....

I haven't been to sleep in that long. I is tired. Happy St. Patrick's Day!! And thank y'all so much for your supports. *hugs* If I stop making sense then feel free to laugh at me. It's been a loooooong day. So, yesterday Sandy took me around to pick up fix-a-flat and some other essentials. I called my dad and he said to just replace the tire since we have to get the van inspected and it was too bald to pass anyway. Seriously. Barely over the penny ridge, forget touching Lincoln's head.

Honestly. I tried to sleep last night. Elvis kept stomping on my head and then Aaron got off the computer so I figured I'd catch up on some mails and stuff. Then Sandy and I got to chatting about finding a website where you can try on different hair doos. If ya hadn't noticed, we found one. (in my photos I have an album called "Virtual Makeover") We went through dailymakeover.com. You can even do makeup and sunglasses. The only part that really sucked ass was the colored contacts. . . . although we did figure out a few features that helped towards the end of our makeover madness so maybe that had one too? Maybe. I think we made ourselves over for something like 2 or 3 hours!

Which put the time for me at 6:30 in the morning. An hour and a half until Discount Tires opened. I sort of laid down with my eyes closed. Making sure my alarm was set and my ears were tuned into the weather channel. At 7:30 I went out and tried the fix-a-flat. It worked just enough for me to coax the van out of the mud. I parked it on the corner where it is dry to change into the donut. I hate that thing. Mostly cuz it's a motherbitch to get out from under the van! It's supposed to come all the way out so you can turn it on it's side and remove it. It doesn't. It doesn't even come within 6 inches of the edge of the van. It took me, Aaron and my dad on the phone to get it off.

Then off I go! I love going to that place. They are so nice. I didn't have an appointment (they were full on appt.s 'til afternoon) and they had my tire in stock. Just like it said online. Hurray! The price was $12 more than we paid last time, but that's okay. Oh. I forgot to check and make sure i got the warranty. The price matched what I got online and I had the warranty added, and the guy said he put it in there, but I still should have checked.

Then I had to go to Walgreens and HEB. Yay. I had to get cleaner and paper towels. The inside window got all smudged and dirty and I could barely see to get the tire fixed! Now it's all crystal clear and sparkly. And then I come home, sit for a bit, get online (and here I am!!) and now i'm about to try maybe catching up on a game or two on neopets and I'm going to try and at least nap. I know my mom's going to want to see me when she gets home. Just, ya know, if I normally talk to you online and you don't see me, that's why. I'm exhausted!

*hugs* Love you guys. Y'all take care and don't worry about me. ^_^ I'm fine. If you want to pray for or send healing energies to anybody, send it to my mom. She's the one who really needs it.

We're Bad Ninjas

Yes, you read that right. We're bad ninjas. Don't get too excited. I'm not revealing all of our Ninja secrets. Oh no. That would not be a very ninja thing to do! But I can reveal how we (Sandy and I) came to this conclusion. Because you just can't know something like that until you try. ^_^

We went to Wal*Mart to get boxes for Brak. We got so many boxes! 2 carts full of cardboard goodness. We packed 'em into the van and decided we were going to make a covert ninja drop in the middle of the night so Brak could be all surprised when she woke up in the morning. How much fun is that? (The answer is: Lots!)

Our first un-ninja problem was getting there. You think her place is hard to find during the day? Ha! That's nothing compared to nighttime. It was so much easier somehow before they fixed the highway of death. But I digress. We unanimously decided that Brak's driveway is a ninja. We circled that stretch of road 3 or 4 times before finding it. So we pull up good and close (ninja mistake #2) because that's a lot of boxes to move. We're doing really well keeping quiet until someone *cough~SANDY~cough* drops her phone and then drops boxes!

We decide to leave a ninja message proclaiming our ninja-ness, but alas! No pen. We search the van relentlessly and I finally find one wedged under the driver seat. (BTW: I was just cleaning out the van looking for some fix-a-flat and I found another pen under that netting) So we go back and leave our message and horror of horrors! We're caught!! Yeah, we're bad ninjas. ^_^ It wasn't even the noise that got us caught, but the lights from the van. Cuz animals don't make light. At least, none of the ones moving around her place at night. So we hang out and have a good laugh at our ninja escapade. So we're bad ninjas, but I haven't had that much fun with my girls in the middle of the night in a long time, so it wasn't a complete loss. All we need is some practice and soon we may become mediocre ninjas! Muahahahaha! You never know when we'll strike. Cuz I'm not gonna tell. *zips lips*

Also, before I pass out, I just noticed that when I lightened up that picture (yes, that picture, my default one) to show off my haircut I inadvertantly made it look like I have a zit on my nose. I do not. It is a rhinestone fake nose piercing. I'll upload a better picture of it just as soon as I feel like. Which may be now . . . . maybe after I wake up. Who knows? I'm a ninja!!

Grandpa's Passed

Just heard from my mom that my grandpa passed away this morning. The up side is that he's not suffering anymore. As I mentioned, he's been sick for a while. And with his mind almost completely gone since my last post it really is better this way. My mom's taking it pretty hard, of course. Still no word on when the funeral is going to be. Well . . . I guess it is kind of early to know something like that.

About Freakin' Time!

*gasps* Is it possible? Could it really be? Are *gasps* people actually waking the hell up?! Maybe. Howard K. Stern and the Dr.s are finally being charged with Anna Nicole's murder! OMFG everybody already knew he killed her! How could it have taken so long to gather up proof?

And the so-called Octo-Mom's mom needs to get her head out of her damn ass. It's okay for her to leave her daughter to try and care for her kids on her own, but we're supposed to donate our own monies to care for a bunch of kids that never should have been brought into this world in the first place? She already had 6 kids!! "They're not punishing her they're punishing the kids" No. How about if she can't care for the kids then they'll be put in homes where they can be cared for. Finally people are deciding to not reward stupidity just because of "the kids".

If only I could wake up every day to headlines that make me this giddy. 'Course there was that one proclaiming "Alabama shooter was depressed" Oh well la-dee-da! Let's just cry him a river. Let's all play our world's smallest violins for the depressed guy who just couldn't hack it and decided to take it out on innocent people. Get over yourself.

I wish the rain would stop. At least long enough for the driveway to re-solidify. Also, it's hard to find places and privacy enough to move around indoors. But I'm managing.

Today Was Funny ^_^

Okay, so we had the house opened up on account of how hot it's been. Which made it really really cold after this morning's rain. Aaron went out and came back in. Where's the puppy?! She usually jumps right up and follows us around. She loves the love. So where's the puppy? Here's the puppy!!

She was chilly and curled up under my mom's blanket. So cute!!

Yes, even though it was wet and muddy I did walk my 20 back-and-forths today. Threw on my jacket and trudged in the mud. So there. Because it takes something like 2 or 3 weeks to establish a routine and skipping today because of rain would have set me back. I did pick up a pedometer. It's greenish. It doesn't turn off, though, so there's no telling how long the battery is going to last. And I think it's going to be cheaper to pick up another than to replace the battery.
After Dollar Tree we went to HEB. Walked past the coinstar and Aaron thought he saw a quarter! So I went back to check it out. Turns out it was some kind of Arabian coin that looks like a quarter, 2 pennies stuck together, a plastic penny and a real penny. See:

Strangest thing.

Okay, so maybe not that funny. Adding in the rain and wind and puddles and sliding all over the driveway in and out. *meh* Amusing anyway. Enjoy the pics. ^_^

And I Raaaaaaan

^_^ Okay, so that's a fib. That song is stuck in my head!! But I have started part 3 of my betterment regimen. I'm back to drinking my water (Barker :-p) and part 3 is also helping with the meditation part.

So the long walk through the trails brought something to my immediate attention. I'm so out of shape! Yeah, it wasn't just the walking but also the last series of pics I took. Shameful. Mostly it was the walking, though. I used to walk those trails all the time with no problem. This last time I was so out of breath. So, part 3: Walking. Today was day 2 of that. I'm going to get a pedometer (Dollar Tree! *whoot*) so I can have a better gauge on how I'm doing. I didn't quite count yesterday. Back and forth along Aaron's talk trail (and a few trips around the house) until my legs hurt, then a little further. Today I did 20 trips back and forth. I stretched after the first 2 so my legs didn't hurt so bad. I did count steps yesterday and it takes me about 35 one way, so that's 1400 steps. Shameful. Well, concidering my book on natural remedies recommends an additional 10,000 steps added into your day for actual health benefits. So I'd have to do that 7 times a day. :-.. So it's a start. If it's not raining I'm going out again after I'm done online. Wish me luck!

Semi-Sad Kinda Day (piccies!)

Such a sad adventure day. Started as a hospital trip. Picked up Sandy and we made our way to Ft. Hood. O.o Hurray! lol Went to Darnell for test results, swung by the recycling bins to make a deposit, gas station then highway to Temple! You would not believe the construction on the way to Scott & White! They put in a clover-leaf!!! *dies* As if Loop 363 wasn't confusing enough.
So we made it to the diagnostics building easily enough. Only to find out the Dr. wasn't there. Reschedule then it's off to Chalk Ridge! aka: The Walking Trails. I had never been in the bathroom there before, on account of the bees, but we just could not hold it. Hehehe. Check this out:

Notice the lack of tank? That's cuz it's just a hole in the ground! Sandy got a good laugh at me hovering 2ft from the ground. Well, I didn't wanna pee all over it, did I? It coulda gotten on my shoes! *shudders*

Along the trail we found a pair of socks. Seperated from each other of course.

How does a person just up and lose their socks?

Ah, it was so peaceful. And so much the same. I expected the flood to have decimated it like it did Dana Peak. Especially as high as it got on the dam. But it was nice. Just a little worn in some places. Until . . . . disaster.

The flat bridge and the big swing bridge were out of order. In a big way!

That was the whole reason we went out! That bridge is so much fun. I hope when they're renovating all the parks they put up a nice swingy bridge like that one. Not some stable piece of work. lol

Then we went out to Dana Peak Park. aka The Island. We didn't get quite out to the island. We went to the pier. For what that was worth.

This drought really isn't doing the lake any favors. Also, back to the flood. And the rebuilding of our parks. Remember all the so many trees that used to be out on the way to the Island?

All gone. Well, not all, but a lot. It smelled good, but looked terrible. So sad.

So, in the interest of ending on a nice picture. There was a wierd squiggle tree growing out on the trail. I caught the sun in this one so it's odd and pretty. Enjoy.

So purdy. If you want to check out all of the pics from our travels today, check out my album here.

(Bad News)^2

Yeah, that's bad news squared for you non-nerds. I haven't been making newscasts out of my maternal grandfather's health . . . for a lot of reasons. It's bad. It's been bad. It gets a little better, then gets even worse. My aunt has been taking care of him as best she can, but he's been spending more and more and more time in the hospital. My uncle went out from NJ to visit with him and then my aunt's husband went out for a while. He called my mom (or he might've called my dad and he called my mom, I'm not 100% clear on that) and said that if she wants to spend any time with him while he can still recognize her then she might want to get her butt up to PA pronto. *sigh* It's so bad that we're getting her a one-way ticket so we don't have to try and juggle tickets/trips in case she needs to be there for his funeral. Well . . . not "need", but I know she would want to be there and we would want her to be able to be there. So rather than have her there for a week only to fly back up a week later, we're just playing it by ear. First we have to hear from Metroplex about when they want to do her sleep study. We don't want to put the trip off too far, but these appointments are kind of hard to get so if she can work between the sleep study and the follow-up then that would be best.

Just in case you're curious, we got the results of her last sleep study. Average 10x an hour her blood oxygen dips to 69% saturation. Now, if you're in the hospital and your blood oxygen goes down to 90% the nurses freak out and hook tubes into your nose. So these next two sleep studies are to determine which method of oxygen deliverance will work best for her.

But that's not the other half of the bad news. I'm not one to tell a person they should live longer than they feel is necessary. Especially someone who is old or sickly. Or especially both. But I was really hoping that he would be able to hang in there until our little problem was taken care of. That is one thing that's going to have to be discussed before she sets foot one on any plane. I'm not going to be here for a month with some little bitch thinking she can do whatever the hell she pleases. Not gonna do it. *sigh* We'll make it through somehow. We always do. But it's certainly not gonna be easy.

Death Penalty Debate

The other day they kept doing one of those news previews saying that the death penalty here in Texas could be in trouble. Of course, we never caught the actual newscast, so if anybody has any further specific information on how that's going, let me know. ^_^ In the meantime, here's an article from the Dallas news.
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/localnews/stories/DN-deathalways_27met.ART.State.Edition1.4a6a995.html

High costs figure into death penalty debate, but Texas holds firm

12:00 AM CST on Friday, February 27, 2009

By DIANE JENNINGS / The Dallas Morning News
djennings@dallasnews.com

Death penalty opponents across the country are using the plight of strained state budgets as an added reason to abolish the final sanction. The argument appears to be gaining traction in some states – but not in Texas, the nation's leading death penalty state.
"I don't think it's driving the effort in Texas the same way we're witnessing in other states," said Kristin Houlé, executive director of the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty.
Legislators in eight states are considering abolition bills, said Richard Dieter, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, and the issue of money has been raised in all of those discussions.
The cost of the death penalty includes not just the cost of high-security incarceration and the execution itself, but years of appeals. The issue of expense has been raised before but "resonates a lot more" because of the fiscal crisis, Dieter said.
But "that doesn't mean it's the only issue people are considering."
State Rep. Lon Burnam, D-Fort Worth, co-author of an abolition bill, said the cost issue is not his primary concern. "We're doing this on moral grounds," he said.
But he believes capital punishment is "not worth what it costs. Our money could be better spent in the correctional system."
He doesn't expect the cost issue to change many minds because, he said, state policymakers are more interested in vengeance.
"It disappoints me that the very people that will talk about, 'We need to be rational and look at the cost-benefit analysis of everything we want to do,' are pandering to an emotion," he said. "And it's a bad emotion."
Dieter said numerous studies show "the bottom line is, it's costly," but death penalty advocates are not convinced. They say such studies don't take into account the deterrence effect of the death penalty or the money saved through plea agreements spurred by fear of the death penalty.
And even if capital punishment is more costly, expense "should not be the primary factor," said Dudley Sharp, who monitors death penalty legislation. "It's like saying, 'Incarceration costs more than probation, so we should get rid of incarceration and only probate people.' It's ridiculous."
The primary reasons to retain the death penalty have nothing to do with cost, he said. "First is, it's just and deserved, and the second is that it helps protect us. And so those two things take precedent over cost savings."
